The move towards data and away from selling minutes is intensifying, as even new Telecom chief executive Simon Moutter recognises as he proposes a new data cable to Australia, perhaps to stop someone else from peddling bits and bytes on another circuit.
There's new technology coming up, with Vodafone and Telecom both launching 4G, the former ahead of the latter. Again, data is driving that evolution and not calling - I'm not even sure that the telcos will bother with high-definition audio codecs for their LTE networks to make voice call quality better.
