This was a major change project and an outstanding success with minimal disruption to customers. It's fair to say, however, that this success was no accident. This week we've asked ANZ's GM for Technology Craig Bunyan to give an inside view of what went right and why.

The move towards data and away from selling minutes is intensifying, as even new Telecom chief executive Simon Moutter recognises as he proposes a new data cable to Australia, perhaps to stop someone else from peddling bits and bytes on another circuit.

There's new technology coming up, with Vodafone and Telecom both launching 4G, the former ahead of the latter. Again, data is driving that evolution and not calling - I'm not even sure that the telcos will bother with high-definition audio codecs for their LTE networks to make voice call quality better.

Most readers will have heard the very sad news over the Easter weekend that 2Degrees CEO Eric Hertz and wife Kathy were involved in a fatal plane crash and are presumed to have died. The IITP community is greatly saddened by Eric's passing and extend our condolences to the family and friends of Eric and Kathy, as well as the wider 2 Degrees family.
