OPINION: IPocalypse Now by Don Stokes, Director and Network Architect, Knossos Networks So you've probably heard there's a bit of an issue when it comes IPv4 addresses - if you haven't you've probably been living on a cloud somewhere, and not the good kind. You will have heard plenty of people talk about this whole IPv6 thing, but what is that and why does it matter?
In short, on 3 February this year IANA allocated the last five /8 IPv4 address blocks, one each, to the five Regional Internet Registries (RIRs). As of that day, there are no more "normal" IP addresses. Zip. Oh woe is us!
