This week the Associate Minister of Local Government released the report of the Online Voting Working Group, looking into the feasibility of allowing online voting in New Zealand's local body elections.

As IT Professionals, it's quite normal for our first reaction to the idea of online voting to be to recoil in horror. We consider risk from the position of likelihood of damage and potential extent of damage and while these days the first is diminishing significantly, the second is certainly enough to keep us up at night.

But online voting could work in New Zealand. Read on to find out how.

When the DIA launched the beta.govt.nz website in August 2013, people noticed its striking similarity to a certain website from the United Kingdom, GOV.UK. That was no accident. The UK website is an open source project that seeks to radically redefine government online delivery and share those innovations with the world. We took them at their word.

With the new govt.nz site going live last week, what exactly did we borrow from the UK? And more importantly, what did DIA do to ensure that our solution meets the specific needs of New Zealanders? IITP CEO Paul Matthews, who sat on the working group, welcomed the release of the report today, saying that the report plots the path forward for online voting in New Zealand, and carefully weighs up the issues around security and other factors.
