Private and local cloud services have often been characterised by proprietary software and specialised hardware. As well as potentially making this technology expensive and inaccessible, some argue that these platforms bring vendor lock-in and technical capture risks, while open source software works to remove these barriers.

Catalyst's challenge over the last 3 years has been how to address and disrupt this market with robust high availability solutions using 100% open source software as well as open and commodity hardware.

Bringing viable cost effective cloud computing onshore has not been straight forward and Don will talk about the solutions - OpenStack, Ceph, Open Compute, analytics and Porirua.

The opportunities for the New Zealand tech sector to leverage these open source technologies and build your own micro-cloud is now real and exciting. Whilst Catalyst might have led the work here in NZ the open source cloud community in NZ is diverse and growing. This bodes well for our digital future.

Light lunch included.
