How Weather Forecasting Works

Ever wondered how weather forecasting works?

Twice a day, the UC Centre for Atmospheric Research publishes weather forecasts (at www.ucar.canterbury.ac.nz/weather). Most of us take these and other weather forecasts for granted, however there's a heap of work behind the scenes involved in getting these as accurate as possible.

What you may not know is that, in this case, data is analysed and the forecast calculated by the BlueFern BlueGene/L supercomputer (albeit using of a small fraction of its capacity).

In this presentation Tony Dale of BlueFern will run through the process of these twice daily forecasts from start to finish, including gathering the data and the complexities of the software used to analyse it, through to the final output you see on the site above.

About The Speaker

Tony Dale Bsc(Hons), MSc, MIITP ITCP, has over 20 years of experience in academic computing at the University of Canterbury. Tony has been a member of the BlueFern high performance computing unit since 2006, and is involved in all aspects of its supercomputing activities.
