Privacy breaches were one of the hot topics of 2012. Could you and your organisation find yourself at the eye of the next privacy media storm? Privacy Commissioner Marie Shroff will talk about lessons from the 2012 data breaches and the "annus horribilis" these made for ACC and MSD. She will give some pointers on privacy best practice for business and government, and how to avoid or mitigate breaches.
Marie will also discuss new doors opening to the European market for NZ ICT businesses through recent EU clearance of our privacy law.
Includes full sit-down Breakfast from 7:30am. Speaker Begins 8:00am.
About The Speaker
Marie Shroff has been Privacy Commissioner since 2003. She has led the office in its increasingly public role to protect personal information, especially in the context of the evolving digital world. She has dealt with many high profile public and private sector privacy breach investigations. In recent years she has promoted guidance to business and to the public on being responsible corporate and digital citizens. Her office deals with 1000 written and 8000 free phone enquiries a year; it also regulates industry standards for handling personal information (such as in health, credit reporting, telecommunications), comments on government policy, interacts with business and the IT industry and monitors New Zealander's interests in the increasingly global digital environment.
From 1987 to 2003 Marie Shroff was Secretary of the Cabinet, and earlier in her career worked in foreign affairs, teaching, journalism and in the public service.
