John will discuss how the planning skills and training he has acquired during his military career were used in South Sudan, including when civil war broke out in December 2013, and how they can be used in business.

In this session he will also look at possible lessons businesses can take note of in order to better conduct planning within their own business.

This will include describing how all officers are educated and trained in planning, and the broad steps in the planning process that they use. These planning skills can be applied, as they are in the military, at the tactical, operational and strategic levels of an organisation.

About The Speaker

John Holley has worked in the ICT industry for 33 years, about the same time he has been a reserve officer in the NZ Army.

He deployed to South Sudan in September 2013, where he was the Deputy J5 (Planning Cell) for the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) military force as well as a lead for the UNMISS mission planning team.
